From the top of his flawlessly groomed head to the waxed tips of his fashionable shoes, Lord Andrew Childe was every inch the perfect gentleman. But Andrew's arrogant composure was almost always shattered by the impertinent Penelope Mortimer, an achingly lovely country beauty who had a clear knack for ruffling his lordship's feathers.

Her nose for trouble seem to land Lord Andrew into the most awkward situations— and love itself quickly became the most delicate of them all!

ABOUT THE SERIES

The temptation to break society’s rules overwhelms even the most prim and proper heroine of the Love and Temptation collection’s seven titles. Beset by awkward situations, mixed identities, ambitious families, these women refuse to bend to society’s whim and still manage to capture true love in the process.

The Perfect Gentleman The Love and Temptation Series Book 7 edition by M C Beaton Romance eBooks

I enjoy M. C. Beaton's stories, and this is another good one. She creates comical situations without going into the completely ridiculous.

Penelope is our heroine, and she is alone in the world. But the lady of the titled family who own the village Penelope lives in loves to sponsor poor girls. She thinks she is helping them by giving them a season, even though the young ladies have no title or dowry. Their chances in the London marriage market are slim and none. Penelope knows she has to go along with the lady's plans or the woman will make life miserable.

Andrew, our hero, is the younger son. He has made his own fortune and not dependent on his family. He is known as The Perfect Gentleman. Andrew never makes a wrong step. His life is predictable and proper. He has just become engaged to a young woman who is quite the sort everyone expects him to marry. She is rich, a social climber and not a deep thinker. Unfortunately for her, she really isn't all that attractive either. But once she has snared Andrew, she is convinced she is irresistible to all men.

However, Andrew finds himself drawn to Penelope. At first he believes her to be somewhat slow as she usually has a dreamy, unfocused expression. This is because she is long-sighted and needs to wear her glasses -- which Andrew's mother has forbidden her to wear.

There is jealousy to deal with, from both female and male characters -- and Andrew's awful mother doesn't like to be thwarted. The couple fights their attraction to each other -- she because she has a brain and uses it -- he because she isn't the sort of woman who won't question his authority.

The reader gets a glimpse into Regency life in these stories. Servants and anyone not of the aristocracy usually weren't thought to be human. But the author gives us a bit of history in the most pleasant form -- clever writing.

I highly recommend this author's works for light, entertaining reading.

The Perfect Gentleman The Love and Temptation Series Book 7 edition by M C Beaton Romance eBooks Reviews

This must be early work of M C Beaton. Stock standard and boring romance novel. Avoid this and read "School for Manners", "House for the Season", and "Travelling Matchmaker" which all feature much more interesting characters and imaginative plots, while still satisfying the rules of romance novels.
I didn't feel a " relationship" with the characters. For the most part, they were shallow and unfeeling particularly the parents of the "perfect gentleman".
It was a good lesson on how not to treat your children or fellow man.
an enjoyable read. just finished my second C Beaton book today. Cant get enough of her fun books and delightful characters. the only negative is, they are too short.
The picture on the cover is probably symbolic of Lord Andrew acting like a puppet, doing everything he believes his beloved tutor would think proper. But in comes Penelope to shake up his world. An enjoyable and entertaining story!
M. C. Beaton hasn't written a story that has disappointed yet. If you enjoy Regency stories, you'll enjoy The Perfect Gentleman, a very silly, very entertaining tale. I'm so glad that she's such a prolific writer.
Very amusing and enjoyable romantic romp in 19th century England. Unpredictable and predictable plot twists, powerful heroes and penniless heroines turn the manners and mores of gentry and nobility on its scandalized ears.
This regency was so cute! I wish it would have been longer with a little more action but it was quaint. The Hero amused me greatly. He was such a stickler. Our heroine was lovely, an innocent country miss forcibly plucked from her comfort zone and thrust into high society. Opposites certainly attract. The Duke and Duchess disturbed me, I hope people like that really didn't exist. Very well written, my only complaint is the length, there needed to be something more, I would have settled for an epilogue. Very highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
