Machine gun fire and rifle bullets zing all around her as she maneuvers her plane to drop her bombs. Her fragile World War I biplane is low enough for her to hear the Germans screaming and yelling, as she presses forward to her drop zone.

This was a typical flight during one night’s sorties. The German soldiers feared and hated the women they called the Nachthexen Night Witches. There were three all-female aviation regiments in the Soviet Union during World War II. This is the story of female heroes who flew under incredibly adverse conditions from women who flew the little, unarmed biplanes and bombed the Germans at night, to the fierce fighter pilots who fought the seasoned German Luftwaffe, humbling them before their peers.

This is a fictional account, based on true stories, of the amazing women who lived, loved and died bravely during the dark days of World War II.

From Wikipedia: The all-women, 588th Night Bomber Regiment flew harassment bombing and precision bombing missions against the German military from 1942 until the end of the war. They flew ifragile, wood and canvas biplanes intended for use as training aircraft and for crop-dusting. The regiment flew over 23,000 sorties and is said to have dropped 3,000 tons of bombs. It was the most highly decorated female unit in the Soviet Air Force, each pilot having flown over 800 missions by the end of the war and twenty-three having been awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union title. Thirty of its members died in combat.

Fly Toward Death edition by Sally A Laughlin Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I've read about the Night Witches before in Military Magazine and appreciated the author's research. Although I'm not surprised that the romance stories were meant to be a big part of the fictional plot, but the writing seemed a lot less professional than the historical segments. An enjoyable read nonetheless.
Great story!
Most interesting
Little known facts about the Russian women pilots woven into a great story.
As an amateur historian, I knew about Soviet women serving in almost all aspects of their military but did not have any in-depth knowledge. Although at times the wording can be a little stilted, I really enjoyed this book for the characters and the relationships they develop. As in most cases, a subject pops up that makes me want to learn more and this book did that!
Super exciting story. I loved this book about Soviet women pilots during the Second World War. It was so real in describing actual events that my heart pounded continually during their experiences. Well worth reading.
Fly Toward Death is an easy read that brings the Soviet female pilots of the 588th to life. We are able to see and feel their strengths, fears, anger, love and heartaches. I found myself emotionally involved with these brave and strong women who were placed in an all male arena long before it was the thing to do. They were met with bigotry and hate by those who could not see beyond old school ways. It was really nice to see that those strongly vocal bigots got what they deserved while others learned to respect, honor, appreciate and recognize these brave and smart women. I would highly recommend Fly Toward Death as it is not only a great novel but based on facts. I wish history was this much fun when I was a kid!
An extraordinarily moving collage of stories of the hardships of the Soviet women pilots and ground crews during World War II. These women were fighter pilots, bomber pilots, navigators, and ground crews living under extremely primitive conditions with just enough food to keep them alive. The bomber pilots were flying World War I bi-planes with no navigation equipment, no protection except the canvas strung over the wooden wings and fuselage of the plane and no weapons except the two bombs strapped beneath the fuselage . The bomber pilots flew from dusk til dawn dropping their two bombs on the sleeping German invaders then returning to their camp for more bombs. These women were patriots for their country willing to do whatever it took to rout the invading German soldiers. As women the world over, they found opportunities to dance and sing and fall in love. They lived and loved under conditions we can barely conceive of today. Many paid the ultimate price for their bravery. Although these stories are fictionalized accounts of these women's lives, the truth of their devotion to their country is illustrated well, the actions depicted could certainly apply to more than one woman who fought for her country.
